Disaster Recovery is More Than Just Technology Part 1

by edwin
While I was at the PASS Summit 2010, I've spent a fair amount of time at the Ask-the-Experts table on high availability, disaster recovery and virtualization. Conference attendees with different requirements on high availability and disaster recovery come to these tables and ask questions.

I've spent a fair amount of time doing high availability and disaster recovery (HADR) in my previous life as a data center engineer focusing on the Microsoft platform. My previous organization sold high availability and disaster recovery solutions to customers like crazy, highlighting the fact that the solutions are more than just the technology aspect. Every time I talk about HADR in my presentations, I focus on the three main ingredients to have a successful implementation - people, process and technology (PPT). Note that technology is at the end of the list as the people and the process components should come first.

What I found out at the PASS Summit gave me insights as to how people approach HADR (and I thought I only saw these on the newsgroups and forums as I answer their questions.) Most SQL Server DBAs (and maybe even a lot of IT professionals) want a technical answer to their HADR problem. They want to know if failover clustering, database mirroring, replication or log shipping is the best solution to their requirement. What's funny is that when I ask them about what their RPO/RTO/SLAs are, they scratch their head and ask what those acronyms are. And when I start explaining these acronyms to them, they still want to hear what the best solution is for their requirement.

As I prepare for my presentation on Disaster Recovery Techniques for SQL Saturday #61 in Washington DC, I'll be writing a series of articles about disaster recovery and what RPO/RTO/SLAs are and how they fit into the whole disaster recovery strategies. Before I dive into the "technology" part of the PPT ingredient for a successful HADR implementation, I will talk about the people and the process part first. Why? Because these two will drive the technology part of the whole strategy. And if you're in the Washington DC area, feel free to drop by at the SQL Saturday event.

Q&A: Remote Desktop Apps

by amy

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook Post to StumbleUpon

Thank you to everyone for attending today webinar on Implementing Remote Desktop Apps. Here is the Q&A from today’s session. Remember our webinars take place every Third Thursday at Noon Eastern. Keep on eye on www.thirdtier.net/blog and our various social media locations for an invitation to the next webinar.

Question: Do you know of a Remote App client for the iPad???? That would be a killer app.
Answer: Eriq has heard of one, but has not seen it or used it.

Question: If the server is being run as a virtual installation, do you use that virtualization role?
Answer: We’ll ask Eriq at the end of the presentation.

Question: Is this the same as ‘change user/install’?
Answer: Yes it is. The installation process for this is pretty much the same as other TS components.

Question: Are apps on this list assumed to be installed in TS mode?
Answer: Yes

Question: The local drive is shown. I thought it was disabled?
Answer: You can make both local and remote drives available to the users.

Question: access to the servers drives and resources are still the same as when logged onto the local network – so no difference – right?
Answer: Permissions and security groups and such all still apply as usual.

Question: is there no way to pass through users Domain credentials?
Answer: I’ll ask Eriq at the end of the presentation. But in the example, he is showing the user computer is not a member of the domain.

Question: How does this handle situation where an application needs to start a second app to function?
Answer: I’ll ask Eriq this question at the end of presentation.

Question: I think what I saw was under the RDS role section.
Answer: The remote dekstop virtualization host enables user to connect to virtual machines.

Question: We are using eClinicalWorks medical app in RemoteApp and it works pretty well, but from time to time the app will seize up and leave a big black box in the middle of the screen that won’t go away.
Answer: We aren’t familiar with this application. Perhaps a permissions issue? If you go to the server are you able to figure out what is supposed to be displayed? There could be many different solutions.

Question: Black window problem hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981156
Answer: thanks!

Question: but not all sessions will desire to have drive restrictions set. Hmm – needs work!
Answer: Yes, but there are global settings on the server itself in the session host configuration manager, under client settings. This effects the whole server and everyone that connects to it. Group Policy is another option.

Question: Thanks guys!
Answer: welcome
Question: Very nice presentation. Vastly underrated feature and it is FREE!
Answer: absolutely
Question: Great sesion thaks for taking the time to share your knowledge….
Answer: thanks
Question: Great info as usual – Thanks!!
Answer: thanks

by steve

Planning for Tech·Ed North America 2011 has begun! TechEd will take place in Atlanta, GA on May 16-19, 2011, with Pre-Conference sessions occurring on May 15.

Key content is sourced via Community groups and is an important component of the event’s success. So please forward this invitation as soon as possible to your members so that people can submit breakout session proposals before the tight December 9, 2010 deadline.

Steps for submitting a proposal:

  1. Go to: https://northamerica.msteched.com/CFT
  2. Enter RSVP Code: CODE*8925
  3. Complete all the fields and submit the proposal/s.

When returning to the Call for Content site, use the e-mail address and password you entered when creating your Call for Content profile.

Breakout Sessions

Breakout Sessions are the primary vehicle for delivering content to Tech·Ed attendees. These are lecture-style, 75-minute presentations that are held in rooms seating anywhere from 200-1,200 people. Speakers take 60 minutes to instruct, walk through product demos and show PowerPoint slides, with 10-15 minutes reserved for Q&A. The PowerPoint files are collected 2 weeks in advance of the event and published for attendees both before and after the event. Breakout sessions are recorded and are also available after the event at Tech·Ed Online.

Event Information

Tech·Ed is Microsoft's premiere global conference designed to provide developers and IT professionals with the technical education, product information and community resources they need to design, develop, manage, secure, and mobilize state-of-the-art software solutions for a connected enterprise. Content focuses on Microsoft’s current and soon-to-released products, technologies and services.

Last year, roughly 70% of Tech·Ed attendees were IT professionals with the majority being Infrastructure Managers (48%) and IT Managers (28%). They were interested in the best ways to plan, design, deploy, manage and secure connected enterprise systems. The remaining attendees were Developers -- programmers (41%), architects (28%), designers (20%), and developer managers (12%) -- who wanted to dive deeper into the latest enterprise development solutions using Microsoft's developer tools, frameworks, and platforms.

Review of Proposals, Selection and Notification

·         Session selection is based on a review of all proposals to determine which meet the needs of the audience, align with the Track focus, and fulfill the messaging requirements of the product groups.

·         Session selection notification will be sent via e-mail by March 2011.

If you have questions about TechEd, contact TEspkr@microsoft.com.

Thank you for your continued support of TechEd. We look forward to seeing you again in 2011! GITCA will be there in the Community Zone and running the BOF sessions in conjunction with our INETA colleagues.

Last year we produced 16 webinars in 2009 and nearly as many in 2010. Our 2011 promises to be back as we participate in the launch of many new product lines at Microsoft. We will be hosting a webinar every Third Thursday of the month for the foreseeable future, so please reserve Noon eastern on your calendar.

  • December 16th Tentative: SBS 2011 Essentials Launch Party
  • January 20th SBS 2011 Essentials Deep Dive

Third Tier has invited you to attend Remote Web Apps – A  Love Story by Eriq Neale.

Many people have heard of Remote Desktop Services Remote Apps (formerly Terminal Server Remote Apps) but either haven’t had an opportunity to implement the solution or just are not sure how to. In this session, Eriq Neale will show how to configure RDS Remote Apps on a Remote Desktop Server and then go over several real-world deployment scenarios. We will also go over how to set up RDS Remote Apps to work with Remote Web Workplace on an SBS Server. Eriq will include case studies on when and why this technology is used.

PASS Summit MVP Birds of a Feather Lunch 2010 – T- 2 days

by edwin
This would be the last blog post before the PASS Summit MVP Birds of a Feather Lunch 2010. I know most, if not all, of the attendees are already in Seatle,WA enjoying the dinner meetups and the 9 C/48 F weather. As I've mentioned in my previous blog post, if you're attending the Birds of a Feather Lunch on Tuesday and decide to drop by my table, make sure you bring with you the print out of the graphic that you've managed to download. Within the graphic is an instruction that you need to follow. I have prepared five (5) special gifts that I will give away to the first five attendees that would give me their version of the graphic print out. So, make sure you be at the lunch table early to get that special gift. I'm pretty sure we'll have a great time.

PASS Summit MVP Birds of a Feather Lunch 2010 – Follow the White Rabbit

by edwin
Remember Neo? The guy who disturbed the order of the matrix? He had dreams of being given instructions to follow the white rabbit to figure out the answer to the question, "What is the Matrix?" Later in the film, he finds a woman with a tattoo of a white rabbit on her shoulder. And, then, he does just as he was instructed.

In my previous blog post, I talked about doing a MVP Birds of a Feather Lunch session at the upcoming PASS Community Summit in Seattle, WA and how you, if you're attending the conference, should watch out for blog posts that contain secret messages so you can get a special gift when you drop by my session. In this particular blog post, you will find a link to a graphic that you can download and print out. I'll tell you what you need to do about the graphic on my next blog post. And while finding out where the secret message is ain't about disturbing the order of The Matrix, it will certainly help you distinguish yourself from the rest
