My Computer is an Insomniac.

by jeremy

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook Post to StumbleUpon

Running Windows 8 lately I have noticed a new trend that was causing me grief.  I would sleep or hibernate my desktop every night, and yet when I woke up in the morning, there it would be, screens dark, but fans spinning and fully awake.  First I was just sleeping the machine, and I figured the reason it was awake in the morning was due to a cat walking across the keyboard at night.  I started to hibernate it, knowing that a cat can not push a power button.

So it finally bothered me enough to take a look a and see if I could figure out what was waking it up.  I opened up an elevated command prompt and typed “powercfg /waketimers”

The reply was:
Timer set by [PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume3\Windows\System32\services.exe expires at 2:59:41 AM on 5/23/2012.  Reason: Windows will execute 'NT TSK\Microsoft\Windows\TaskScheduler\RegularMaintenance' scheduled task that requested waking the computer.

Pretty obvious there, Regular Maintenance wakes up my computer every day at 03:00 AM.  Nice.  Wait, what is regular maintenance?  I open up my Windows 8 Search box and type in “maintenance” and the top result is “Automatic Maintenance”  It runs by default every day at 03:00 AM and by default the check box is set to “Allow Scheduled Maintenance to wake my computer if it is plugged in at the scheduled time”

I unchecked the box, and now my computer will sleep well tonight.

Additional Brain Explosion Content and a Give-Away

by amy

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook Post to StumbleUpon

In a little bit over two weeks Brains will start to explode in New Orleans. I don’t have the count but I haven’t gotten the cease and desist order yet so I’ll assume that there are a few seats left. What’s keeping you? http://www.conference2012.sbsmigration.com/events/session_presenter/

We’ve added a Lunch session with special guest and sponsor Lawrence Teo. (no break at the Brain Explosion!) Lawrence is best known to the SMB community as co-founder of Calyptix Security. In addition to being the lead developer and brain child of the Access Enforcer, Lawrence is also a PhD in Information Security and contributor to Linux Journal. He’s very active in various Linux and OpenBSD communities. Here’s what Lawrence is going to talk with us about during lunch at the Brain Explosion.

Your First and Last Line of Defense: Where do we go from here?

The prevalence of today’s Internet threats means you could very likely be hacked and not even know it.  Your edge firewall that filters traffic in and out of your network now serves as both your first and last line or defense. This role makes your firewall more critical than ever before as security experts are encouraging the industry to focus on damage control just as much as prevention.  Is your current firewall  adequate for today’s threats?  Do you know if your firewall is doing its job correctly?  Can we as a community do more to secure ourselves and those who depend on us?  In this talk, we will discuss the current state of firewalls in light of today’s sophisticated threats and explore the ground breaking application of information sharing for enhanced security.

And for those of you feeling Cloudy…

I’ll have a drawing of two copies of Working with Microsoft Office 365 by Bret Hill. I did the tech edit on this book and O’Reilly has donated a couple of copies to the Brain Explosion. If you aren’t familiar with how to get an Office 365 account setup and what features it contains then this book will be great help to you.

See you in New Orleans!

5 Recent Support Requests

by amy

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook Post to StumbleUpon

  1. Active Directory DFSR Replication may fail after a “dirty” system shutdown – disable DEP for Apache server.
  2. Client locked out of Sharepoint home page – give the “Sharepoint Visitors” Group read only permission to the Calendar. Explain use of permission groups.
  3. Exchange 2010 not running – Forms Based Authentication Service and the RPC Client Access service had failed to start on the last reboot. They failed to start as there is another DC on the network, that is NOT a DNS server. When the server boots, it tries to talk to this legacy server, and it cant get all the Exchange information it needs, so the services fail to start. Install DNS on the other Exchange server.
  4. SBS 2011 Companyweb and Remote Connections not working – Enable port 987 in firewall, start RDP services and set to automatic.
  5. Scanned files not emailing – Scanned files were killed off by the Content filter. Whitelisted the scanner IP address.
