Being the Cloud for Your Vendors

by amy

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook Post to StumbleUpon

In recent weeks, I have been contacted by three of the major vendors that Harbor Computer Services (my local small business IT company) uses about product changes that will require me to become the cloud. Not the whole cloud but part of the cloud. That’s an interesting wrinkle in this whole move the cloud thing isn’t it?

The cloud, while inexpensive isn’t free. I guess maybe that didn’t dawn on cloud vendors until recently. Reality hits when you have to store data or move data. Storing data requires servers with hard drives and backups of those servers consume storage too. Moving data requires bandwidth and the more data you store, the more you backup, the more you move and the more you have to pay for that bandwidth. This gets expensive in a hurry.

What’s the next step when a cloud vendor finds itself with skyrocketing data storage and bandwidth costs? They begin to look around for cheap data storage with someone that probably has excess bandwidth that they might be willing to give away or might accept a very low price for because they are making $0 from owning it today. That’s where IT firms comes in. We have storage space and we have excess bandwidth.

By virtue of NDA I can’t tell you which vendors I’ve been talking to. But do be advised that coming soon – a cloud near you, a cloud in your closet. Be the Cloud.

3 Tools you might want to try: wFetch, PAL and Portable Chrome

by amy

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook Post to StumbleUpon

wFetch

wFetch is a Microsoft tool that has been available since the days of Windows NT. wFetch is a very simple tool that capture the traffic generated by your browser when you visit a website. You can use this information to troubleshoot why a webpage isn’t displaying correctly or why certain elements are blocked.

I recently used this tool to determine why a website was not presenting the SSL certificate terminal server users.

PAL

PAL is a tool hosted by CodePlex. This one assists you in reading performance logs, finding problems and resolving them. There are templates for most Microsoft applications. These templates analyze performance items that are important to the individual application. The best part is that it also interprets the data for you and offers suggestions on how to resolve the issue.

Portable Chrome

I have often said that my superpower of choice would be to simply be able to carry a portable hold around with me to deploy at will, then pick up and take with me for use another day. Portable Chrome comes pretty close. You can install portable Chrome, leave no footprints and pick it up and take it with you to use another time on another machine. You can even keep your settings for use the next time you need to deploy your portable Chrome.

by amy

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook Post to StumbleUpon

Memorial donation for Eriq Oliver Neale are going to CaringBridge. CaringBridge is an amazing “free” resource for patients to stay in touch with their extended family and communities. Through CaringBridge Eriq and Anna were able to convey updates to many people across the world. There are two ways to donate. You can visit CaringBridge.org and make a tribute. Or you can deposit money via paypal to eriqcare@gmail.com funds collected there will be transferred to CaringBridge following Saturday’s service.
If you are attending the life celebration on Saturday, Anna will be collecting yarn of any color or type. A group of her friends will use them to crochet Qcaps and plan on donating them to a local chemo treatment center. One skein makes about two caps.

Eriq Neale Life Celebration Announcement

by amy

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook Post to StumbleUpon

On Friday, Eriq Neale passed away after a year long battle with cancer. He didn’t like the term battle. It didn’t feel like a war. It simply felt like an invader had taken up residence in his body and with a 0% prognosis, there was no war to win, only a fight to continue to live well as long as possible. He did defy the odds.

Eriq did not wish to be known for cancer. He wished to be known for his life achievements and loves. In 44 years he did manage to accumulate quite list of them and certainly earned the right to be proud. If you look down the list, a theme emerges of a man who lived to give to community. He gave of himself to communities in ways that supported those communities in various ways at different times in his life.

  • Music writer and performer
  • Author
  • Microsoft MVP
  • Speaker
  • Student minister
  • “Father” for professional baseball hopefuls
  • Business owner
  • Husband
  • Friend

A couple of these roles touched me personally. We spoke, wrote, and travelled together. We were MVP’s, business owners, business partners and friends. I have said that if we each took out a personal ad, we would have never found one another. Our differences were pretty striking: man-woman, carnivore – vegetarian, Texas – Michigan, MAC – PC, chocolate hater – chocolate addict and on and on, but what we did have in common was a love of community, a sense that we could make a difference and a desire to have fun. We giggled a lot. We took things in stride. We ate ice cream. I learned a lot about baseball. My last text from him read, Go Tigers! We hung out and found humor in almost everything. I’m richer for the fates having put us in the SBS MVP community at the same time where we developed a friendship that was very significant for me. I find that in the middle of life that developing a new best friend doesn’t happen very often. I guess I was lucky.

On Saturday, June 23rd at 2pm Anna Neale, his wife of 18 years, is hosting a life celebration in Denton Texas at the University of North Texas Campus Ministry Center (1501 Maple Street, Denton, TX  76201) where Eriq and his wife originally met and were later married. There will be a short service, followed by a reception, giving us all a chance to celebrate Eriq’s 44 years of life by listening to his music, see pictures of him and reminiscing with his professional peers, friends and family. Anna has extended an invitation anyone who may be interested in attending.

Condolences may be sent to any of the addresses below:

UNT Campus Ministry Center 1501 Maple Street Denton, TX  76201

Anna Neale 7017 Riverchase Trail Denton, TX  76210

EON Consulting, LLC 1204 W University Dr., Ste. 312 Denton, TX  76201

with a void in my heart,

Amy
