Question: I have some older wise thin clients will mps 2011 work with them?
Answer: If it connects via USB, Ethernet or Remote Desktop Client then yes.
Question: I can listen & watch very clearly from India !
Answer: Very good! Welcome
Question: Not getting any audio!
Private Answer: Ken, go to the voice & video and choose options. It will reconnect you.
Question: can we get these slides?
Answer: They will be in the recording and available in the Forum too.
Question: how far away from the ‘MP’ server can the desktop be located and what is the conneciton, CAT5?
Answer: It depends on the connection device that you are using. USB hubs are limited to 15 feet. Remote desktop and terminals are unlimited. Ethernet devices are limited to ethernet length limits. In summary, the distance is only limited by the connection method.
Question: dual monitor support?
Answer: if the client supports it yes. At this time that’s probably only remote desktop connections.
Question: Can the MP Server run in Hyper V?
Answer: Yes it can. It has the standard 1+1 licensing for that.
Question: can LOB apps like QuickBooks run on MP Server?
Answer: Yes, they can! Andy Goodman used it for this purpose in production already.
Question: Will WMS work with thin-client (e.g., Wyse) boxes?
Answer: Yes, you can use terminals to connect.
Question: what process required to return a users session back to default each logon? NO – I want all sessions to start the same. regardelss of what they load after.
Answer: can change it back in the console. Simple check box.
Question: Office 2010 Licensing for terminal services the same.
Answer: Yes, licensing is the same as any terminal server for applications.
Question: I assume you can put your screen on all the screens at once.
Answer: Yes you can do that too
Question: What OS is on the client computers
Answer: The client computers get a Windows 7 experience via the MultiPoint server.
Question: but is there an underlying os on the client?
Answer: There does not have to be any OS on the client.
Question: Steady State type operation was what I was asking about
Answer: It doesn’t Steady State but you can use Group Policy to effect the same kind of thing
Question: at it pro toronto earlier this month someone asked if this will act like steadystate and allow users to make changes for the session but reset to defaults when you logoff example install a program like a pdf converter and remove it at log off
Answer: You would need to use Group Policy to make this happen.
Question: How does MultiPoint compare to RD server? When would I use one vs the other?
Answer: MultiPoint is RD server with some add-ons. You should use it when you want the MultiPoint Features of workstation management, and zero client support.
Question: Is there a trial version I can test with?
Answer: Yes a full feature trial is available on the multipoint website at Microsoft.
Question: what are the thin client requirements? RDP version requirements?
Answer: Thin clients need RDP version compatible with Windows 2008 R2.
Question: What vendors offer monitor/keyboard/mouse to USB boxes that can be used with MultiPoint?
Answer: Wyse, Atrus, HP and any plain old USB hub.
Question: Does it support multi monitors, is that two sessions or one session on multimonitor?
Answer: It supports dual monitors if you are using an RDP client that supports it. You can also have two users share a single monitor in split screen.
Question: How does connection to clients work? Does it locate every machine on the local network, locate everything on the client machine or what?
Answer: It detects the USB connection. When the PC is turned on it asks you to hit a specific key, H for example, it uses this information to identify which keyboard belongs to you.
Question: What about printing same as terminal servers?
Answer: Yes, printing is the same.
Question: Do these devices work with WMS when it’s a Hyper V guest?
Answer: USB devices are a problem with any virtualized server. MultiPoint is no different. You would need to use traditional terminal server connections.
Question: Are there any limitations of MultiPoint that do not apply to RD server, in terms of business deployment and applications for example?
Answer: The domain join version is limited to 20 connections.
Question: Can user have remote access to the same desktop, meaning at work they have a thin client and then they go home and need to remote in, will they get same desktop profile or something different?
Answer: They will get the same desktop because they will be connecting to the same RDS session.
Question: Price Multipoint vs RD server? Example: 5-15 users
Answer: MultiPoint server $817 manufacture suggested retail price. $139 or $110 for the two types of cals. More on that in a few minutes.
Question: Are there any thin client devices that support multiple (multipoint) users on a single client?
Answer: Not that I’m aware of.
Question: What’s that Session Agent ?
Answer: a terminal services session
Question: what about sbs 2011 standard?
Answer: It will see it as a PC on the network and can manage it as such.
Question: what about SBS 2011 STD?
Answer: It will see it as a PC and can manage it as such.
Question: What are the local & RDP based printing capabilities?
Answer: These are the same as in terminal services. Nothing different about printing.
Question: So how does multipoint connect to terminals connected to networked machines? Is everything on usb or does multipoint read network addresses?
Answer: It uses remote desktop client.
Question: workstation, pc og server as hardware?
Answer: I don’t understand this question, could you clarify?
Question: So if you are not connecting clients locally there is not a lot of difference between this and TS server?
Answer: The management features are the only difference at that point.
Question: I’m not familiar with that. Can it locate clients on the usb connections to the client pc which is on the wms network? In other words, now does it locate terminals that are in the second layer down from the server?
Answer: Ah..no it can’t. The stations have to be directly connected to the MultiPoint Server. The only thing between the client and the server is the USB hub.
Question: The typical classroom is 28-30 students. Is there something that works for that?
Answer: You can have multiple multipoint servers for that. They can be managed from a single console for the teacher.
Question: I don’t understand WMS cal vs WS cal
Answer: Ts and OS cal
Question: Can you explain that more?
Answer: explain which?
Question: Can you explain more about how it works when you have more than 20 in a classroom?
Answer: I will ask Dean to go over it again.
Question: Can I get those PPTs ? If Yes,then how ?
Answer: Yes, please watch the thirdtier.net/blog and /forum
Question: So there is a 20 simultaneous connection limit for Premium. Can you configure more than 20 users? (Only 20 can connect at any one time).
Answer: There is no limit on the number of users. But only 20 can connect at one time.
Question: Not being familiar with Terminal Services in my normal client environments, I have a question regarding applications. If we’ve got all of the proper licenses in place, can each station run Office Apps and/or other 3rd party apps provided there is enough memory?
Answer: Yes with the proper licensing.
Question: I still don’t get WMS CAL + WS CAL. Is WMS Multipoint, and does it include RD server CAL, and is WS the Windows RD host server CAL?
Answer: When the person connects with a zero client, that is directly via USB then you need the more expensive CAL because that client doesn’t have an OS. However, if you are connecting from a client that already has a winodws CAL, like a laptop or PC or thin client then you need the less expensive CAL.
Question: How does the licensing work with the 6 PCs with 6 users each?
Answer: 6 cals for the PC connection.
Question: Got any infomation on backup and storage limits in Multipoint Server
Answer: same as windows servere, no difference at all.
Question: So please explain how the pcs connect and how their client terminals connect.
Answer: they use remote desktop software if they are a PC.
Question: to install MP station does the pc need to has a os install (i.e win7) or can MP be installed on bare metal?
Answer: It can be on bare metal
Question: So remote access would be using SSL and port 443 like ts 2008 ?
Answer: No, they are making an RDP connection
Question: Would it be feasible to have a WMS at a remote site connected via a T-1 connection back to the main site thus providing each user at the remote site with a desktop?
Answer: Yes most likely
Question: If its TS i would assume that you could use the gateway service so you dont have RDP wide open? Thus using 443 instead of 3389
Answer: Yes it can be configured that way
Question: I’m coming in late, so I apologize if I already missed this. Is there going to be pricing information available? What are the differences between the standard and premium versions? What is the availability of the product? Is it going to be OEM only?
Answer: Yes its in the deck and available.
Question: a double RDP (for Amy’s situation) isn’t a great experience, but it is acceptable if you’ve got good connectivity
Answer: yeah, I’m going to just have to try it.
Question: how can we get the slide deck?
Answer: I will put the decks in the forum www.thirdtier.net/forum. Recording will be at /store
Question: Thanks Amy and Dean!
Answer: welcome
Question: Will the Q&A be available within the deck you post?
Answer: Yes and the Q&A will be available on the /blog too
Question: Are there connectivity devices for having a keyboard, montor and mouse at a users desk which is then connected back to the WMS via a single CAT5 cable?
Answer: I saw a picture of one on the ATrust website, but it wasn’t available for purchase yet, so it seems they are coming soon.

This month Third Tier welcomes guest presenter Dean Paron, product manager of Microsoft MultiPoint Server to our Third Thursday webinar. I know what you’re thinking…what’s MultiPoint Server?

MultiPoint Server is a new implementation of Terminal Services. It allows you to reuse older PC’s, use terminals instead of PC’s or even eliminate PC’s by connecting via USB multiple people directly to the MultiPoint Server. Everyone gets a Windows 7 desktop display and the admin can view everyone desktops from a remote location. You need to see it in action and hear Dean’s explanation of how it works. Although built with schools in mind, although built with schools in mind, I totally believe that it has a place in small business as well. It’s very cool and I think everyone of us can find a use for in small/medium businesses.

Top 5 Things You Can Do with Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 in the IT Department

Maximize your technology investments and reduce upfront costs. Windows® MultiPoint™ Server 2011 gives you a way to tap into the unused processing power of a single PC to give multiple users their own computing experience. Because you can reuse older hardware, you can reduce hardware acquisition costs by 35 to 50 percent—all while giving your users the most current Windows® 7 experience. You can even use large screen monitors and split screens between users.

Reduce energy costs and consumption. Because you’re only powering one computer for multiple users, Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 can help you reduce your energy consumption. Many schools have saved up to 90 percent in their power costs. In addition, you won’t need as many drops.

Provide broad client support. With Windows MultiPoint Server 2011, you can connect in multiple ways and support different clients. For instance, you can connect workstations directly to the host computer by using USB or video card, or connect PCs, thin clients, network monitors, and more through your local area network (LAN). You can even use a hybrid of both. And if you choose the LAN option, Remote FX supercharges high-definition video. Finally, you can connect keyboards and mice at each station either using USB or a wireless connection.

Get simple set up and management. With Windows MultiPoint Server 2011, you’ll have fewer hosts to maintain, and those that remain can be managed from the single MultiPoint Manager console. In addition, administrators can log on to all stations at one time with auto-logon, use existing Windows Group Policies, and provide on-site or remote assistance when teachers or staff need additional help. Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 also lets you run some educational and testing applications and programs that may require unique IP addresses.

Use Microsoft Windows® Update for updates and patches. You can get automatic access to updates and patches through Windows® Update so you can be confident that your computing systems are up to date. In addition, support is available from Microsoft or our authorized partners—even remote assistance if teachers need help.

This webinar walks through validating that your SBS 2003 server is ready for migration to SBS 2011. However, all of the techniques and checks would also apply to a stand alone environment as well. The same concepts can also be used for migrating from SBS 2008 although you would need to change the versions of the items that are being validated.

Using the process outlined to validate that your environment is working well is the key to successful migration.

Here’s where to find the webinar: http://www.thirdtier.net/store/

Question: Will this meeting be recorded?
Answer: Yes this meeting will be recorded and available for later download at www.thirdtier.net/store
Question: Is ShadowProtect supported in SBS 2011 yet?
Answer: Yes, Storagecraft SBS is now supported.
Question: Do you have an outline available to us that includes both the Microsoft prep list and your list? I think you can see how it might be confusing to try to combine on our own.
Answer: Amy will be blogging the verification items
Question: When will the on demand of this webinar be available for viewing?
Answer: It will be up in a few days
Question: Just to verify what I think I heard….the slides will not be available for download?
Answer: The recorded webinar is available only.
Question: typo –us.pool.ntp.org not net.org
Answer: Yes this is correct. Thanks for pointing it out.
Question: Will you demo a migration? and have you tried Karls Zero Downtime Migration I know Kevin Royalty prefers the Swing Migration…. Susan Bradleys Blog has lots of migration Information
Answer: sbsdiva.com All migration methods are good ones. Find the one that works for you.
Question: when you did your p2V SBS 2003 restore to test you must have had to deal with SID issues, could you elaborate on getting that test/learning environment together and how you addressed the SID issue?
Answer: no SID issues. I user Hyper-V and restored my test server into it.
Question: At which stage do you disable the original administrator’s account?
Answer: Not until the migration is 100% complete and the SBS 2003 has been removed from the domain
Question: Are you deploying any A/V in your migrations?
Answer: We remove the A/V on the day that migration starts.
Question: Then can you repost the Microsoft article from the beginning of the webinar?
Answer: technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg563799
Question: will you have these slides available to download? or is all this info in the Microsoft doc you referenced in the beginning? What is that URL again?
Answer: Slides are not available for download, but the webinar is recorded.
Question: one of the Microsoft steps towards the end of the migration is to UNINSTALL the Exchange 2003 from the old 2003 box before they decommission the sbs 2003 server – why do they do this? please discuss the concluding considerations (eg we will want to turn off that old power hog box that the sbs 2003 was on)?? comments please
Answer: Because Exchange 2003 is integrated into AD and will remain there if you don’t.
Question: could you repost the side that displays the 2 bits of software you need to install before installing the migration tool
Answer: It is on the screen now for you. They are powershell 2.0 and baseline configuration analyzer 2.0
Question: One more question….migration from SBS 2008 to SBS 2011?
Answer: should be easier, look for the technet doc there is on for this scenario
Question: Thank you very much Amy can we still create sales dashboards or other dashboards in sharepoint foundation 2010?
Answer: yes, you can
Question: are you going to hold another session on the post install steps?
Answer: Yes there will be at least one more webinar on migration
Question: Can do you do all of the prep work remotely?
Answer: YES!
Question: How did you have to modify your SBS 2003 VM as you put it on a separate network from the original box to run that test migration?
Answer: my test servers run in a different IP range.
Question: I like the 2010 version as well I just could not find examples or tutorials for creating dashboards in 2010 and after a google search there was some talk about deploying performance point server and the enterprise version
Answer: performance point is integrated into some version of sharepoint now.
Question: What’s your experience on the Monday for users at PC outlook finding the new Exch 2010 server? the users folder redirect finding the new user tree? and any other comments on the Monday follow up on site (ie after the Migration weekend)?
Answer: Outlook finds the new mailboxes just fine. Folder redirection is a pain and will be covered in the another migration webinar. I stop folder redirection during migration then reenable it after data has all been moved.
Question: With the power of todays quad core servers and storage. can sbs2011 handle the SQL 2008r2 on same box?
Answer: Yes they can. I however prefer running it separately usually in a virtual environment
Question: Did you start an hour earlier today? 12PM EST should be 18PM here in Norway. (or 18.00)
Answer: USA is on daylight savings time now
Question: ok thank you once again I hope you feel better and I hope things work out for Eriq have a great day.
Answer: thank you

The following is the Q&A from the February 2011 Third Thursday webinar on Configuring SBS 2011 Standard. If you didn’t get a chance to ask your question or you have a question after listening to the recording of the webinar, head on over to our Forum site (https://www.thirdtier.net/forum) and post your questions in the Third Tier Info / Webinars area!

Question: If you click on the Status column first, and then in the Startup Column, any services that are not running will be at the top of the list. Saves you from scrolling down the lsit.

Answer: good tip!

Question: for later: certificates: do I order a certicate for remote.corbus.nl or corbus.nl?

Answer: you’ll likely get the cert for remote.corbus.nl, unless you are wanting a wildcard certificate for the entire domain.

Question: Public share is not moved by the Wizards – must be done manually

Answer: That’s correct.

Question: Does the SBS2011 built-in backup support Exchange-aware backup? SBS2008 did not if I’m not mistaken…

Answer: Yes, both SBS 2008 and SBS 2011 do include Exchange as part of the backup process.

Question: If using a third party backup, what is the recommended procedure to get SBS to not report that backup is not configured?

Answer: It was not possible to change that alert in SBS 2008, I have not checked to see if that has changed in SBS 2011, but I suspect that it works the same as SBS 2008, meaning that you will still see the alert even though you have a third-party backup configured and running.

Question: for smaller clients that might use Microsoft Security Essentials will they be reporting back to the SBS console that they are up-to-date, or virus riddled?

Answer: MSE should report correctly to the SBS console

Question: When you change external backup drives in the morning, does it make a full backup at noon on the new cartridge, thereby slowing down the system?

Answer: I believe that is correct. A full backup is taken when a backup drive is swapped out.

Question: Are you seeing issues with Forms Based Authentication service not starting up on reboot?

Answer: answered live

Question: Haven’t seen it on our production 2011.

Answer: Thanks.

Question: setup of USB backup drives needs to be done with all external drives connected – got error when adding another drive until original drives were reconnected

Answer: Great tip!

Question: Symantec Protection Suite Small Business Edition is not yet supported for SBS 2011 – any other recommendations?

Answer: Some of us are holding off on installing any AV on the SBS 2011 for the time being.

Question: If you decide to use Trend client on server, use WFBS6 for now, not WFBS7. We have WFBS7 running on our SBS 2011 TAP site, but recommend WFBS6 on new deployments for now.

Answer: That’s something we’ve heard from several people, thanks for sharing.

Question: I did experience an issue on a clean install of SBS 2011 with BAckup configured and functioning properly. For some reason the Exchange transaction log files were not being committed and deleted. I resolved the issue by killling the origional backup and after reconfiguring backup Exchange realized the backups were being performed and the transaction logs flushed. Much panic when the C: drive ran out of space in a matter of a day or two.

Answer: Thanks for sharing, we hadn’t heard about this specific item.

Question: I have Trend WFBS 7 installed on one production – most current patch released end of January addresses memeory and PCU issues. appears to work OK

Answer: Good to hear, thanks for sharing.

Question: Any issues with Outlook Anywhere / Autodiscover that you have come across on your lab boxes (that have haunted SBS 2008 in the past)?

Answer: answered live

Question: +who does a hosted console for their AV ?

Answer: Trend, Vipre are the two that i’m aware of. Others may also.

Question: thanks guys!

Answer: welcome

Question: Thanks………….. Lots of good info!

Answer: welcome!
