For various reasons we are off schedule this month. This months webinar will not be on the 3rd Thursday, but rather it will be held on the 4th Thursday at the usual time (Noon eastern –5 gmt)

As you may have heard Eriq has moved himself and some of his clients off of Microsoft Exchange in favor of Kerio Connect. He spoke at the spring SMB Nation at length on why he has done this. He has published to his blog and in SMB Nation magazine those reasons as well. Now it’s going to show us how to get a Kerio Connect mail server up, running and configured.

Join Third Tier’s Eriq Neale for a first look at what it takes to get Kerio Connect, an Exchange alternative collaboration solution, up and running on a Windows server. Eriq will walk through the initial setup, installation of the AD Connector, a tour of the Administration Console, and setting up Outlook to interface with Kerio Connect.

Third Tier welcomes Team Bradley to our webinar series. Back in the day, smaller businesses were exempt from most regulation, but not in the new era of information security. Are you making the right recommendations to your clients? Do you need to get up to speed on the new regulations and laws that effect nearly every business? This webinar is for all of us that need to educate our clients on security and information privacy.

Join Team Bradley – Susan Bradley and Bradley Dinerman – from the hotbed states of California and Massachusetts, as they discuss the impact to small firms of recent privacy, security and disclosure legislation.  From PCI data security standards (DSS) to the Massachusetts data security law to the upcoming FCC "red flag" rules, they will discuss and answer your questions regarding security and compliance issues.  Come listen to what you need to do to be compliant, including taking steps such as the development of a written information security policy (WISP), implementation of encryption systems, firewalls, antimalware, employee training and much more.  We will even touch on the security of social networking sites and how they can affect your organization, for better or for worse.

Brad Dinerman is the founder and president of the National Information Security Group (NAISG, www.naisg.org) and the president of Fieldbrook Solutions LLC (www.fieldbrook.net), an IT, MIS and security consulting firm based in Ashland, MA.  He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), a Microsoft MVP in Enterprise Security as well as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and a Certified SonicWall Security Administrator.  He also earned a Ph.D. in physics from Boston College to help him calculate how long it would take to launch his frozen computer across the local highway.  Brad is a frequent contributor to various online TechTips sites and gives user group/conference presentations on topics ranging from spam and security solutions to Internet development techniques. He also published numerous articles in international physics journals in his earlier, scientific career.

Susan Bradley is frequent speaker at SMB conferences, most recently SMBnation East.  She writes the Patch Watch column for Brian Livingston’s Windows Secrets, and was one of the authors of Windows Server 2008 Security Resource kit, and Small Business Server 2008 Unleashed. In real life she’s the IT wrangler at her firm, Tamiyasu, Smith, Horn and Braun, where she manages a fleet of Windows Servers, an Exchange Server, desktops, a few Macs, several Windows mobile and iPhones and tries to keep patches up to date on all of them. In addition, she provides forensic computer investigations for the litigation consulting arm of the firm. She blogs at www.sbsdiva.com on the topics of small business server, tech topics and whatever she stumbled over that day.

Wayne Small , Third Tier consultant and owner of SBSFAQ.com has been deploying Hyper-V based solutions to 80% of his clients. Hyper-V can be simple to deploy, yet powerful enough for high availability applications. It is also technology that your clients really don’t understand at all. So how does he sell it to them? Wayne will tell us how to get up and running, the impact this technology can have your business and how to sell the idea to your clients.

Heard all the hype about Hyper-V?  Want to get your clients up and running on Hyper-V in an hour?  Want to know the key things to look out for with Hyper-V and how to avoid the pitfalls?  This session will run through all of the basics on Hyper-V as it relates to our SMB clients.  It will cover the various flavours of Hyper-V available, what to use when and how to get your first Hyper-V client quoted, and installed.  I’ll walk through a typical scenario that we’ve deployed in the past and how we’ve addressed the clients concerns and taken advantage of Hyper-V to save the customer money, and increase their uptime.

Join us on Thursday April 15th at 5:00pm.

SMB BEERFESTS MARCH 23-25, 2010 EAST COAST

SMB Nation and SpamSoap supporting small and medium business channel partners, technology consultants and resellers at well-respected evening “BeerFests” —

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WA March 17, 2010 – The major worldwide SMB community organization, SMB Nation, announced today that it has teamed with SpamSoap and committed to a series of “BeerFests” in three east coast cities between March 23-25, 2010. This event is limited to 25-attendees.

The small and medium business (SMB) channel partner that attends this evening BeerFest enjoys socializing and networking with like-minded technology professionals and SMB author Harry Brelsford. The attendee also has a strong preference for enjoying a good pint of beer. There is an emphasis on bona fide fun as well as peer-to-peer knowledge sharing.

The agenda is simple. After opening remarks from SpamSoap regarding its SMB protection software and its reseller program, SMB Nation’s Harry Brelsford will introduce the SMB Nation Spring 2010 conference coming to East Brunswick NJ (April 30- May 2). After those short speeches and an honorary toast, the conversations and beer flow freely. Past conversations have included:

· The withdrawal of Windows Essential Business Server (EBS) from the market

· SMB Voice-over-IP alternatives

· Making money in a cloud computing world

· How to sell managed services as an MSP.

“Right now, there’s an incredible opportunity stemming from the recovering SMB market to get together and night and have a friendly beer,” said Harry Brelsford, CEO at SMB Nation.  “An independent VAR/consultant/.channel partner can meet like-minded professionals in a fun environment and discuss business!  Think of these BeerFests as a community event.”

“We’ve found combining business and beer to be a great way to meet the fantastic SMB community,” commented Leonard Dimiceli, director of channel sales for SpamSoap. Details for the 8:00pm to 9:30PM EST evening BeerFest events are:

· New York City (March 24, Wednesday), 8PM EST. Sign up HERE: http://www.clicktoattend.com/?id=146677

If you are like most SMB IT Professionals, you’re a generalist and not a SQL expert. If that’s true this then webinar is for you. Edwin Sarmiento, SQL MVP, will show you how to manage your SQL applications. It’s not as simple as hoping your server backup will cover it and if you’re an SBS or EBS admin you’ve got a bunch of SQL apps installed by default to deal with.

So join us on the Third Thursday, March 18th at Noon eastern.

It’s Third Thursday already! This Thursday at Noon eastern, Third Tier’s Chad Gross will present Disaster Recovery Options in Sharepiont. Sharepoint is an awesome application but if you’re like a lot of IT Pros then the idea of storing files, contacts, calendar, forms all in a SQL database is a bit scary because we aren’t SQL experts. Fortunately for us, Microsoft has implemented several new options for data recovery in sharepoint and the sql part turns out not to be that difficult. Chad will demonstrate how to recover data in Sharepoint using a variety of methods.

Ben Yarborough of Calyptix will be with us next week for our Friends of Third Tier webinar. Calyptix was a first vendor partner for us. Together we are helping Calyptix customers implement and solve security issues in their clients networks.

Ben will give us an overview of the Calyptix product and show what sets it apart in the market. They have designed this firewall specifically for the under 100 user business and it’s a UTM appliance that can help you consolidate some of the security services your clients need into a single device. Being a lawyer by trade, Ben also has a keen understanding of the risks and responsibilities that businesses have.

Please join us next week. Mark your calendar now. The show will start at 12 Noon Eastern (-5gmt), Thursday February 10th.
