How to cultivate the self-managing employee

A gave a presentation for the SMB Online Conference this week and my session was on an important business topic – hiring. In addition to Third Tier, I have also owned an MSP for 23 years. I have had to do a lot of hiring in those 23 years. After too much trial and error, I realized that type of person that I needed to hire, how to recognize them, and how to cultivate any short comings that they had.

Passion + Freedom = Self-Management is the formula that I ended up with. To solve for self-management was the goal and the problem. As a self-described lousy manager with a checkered job history, who didn’t want to spend time managing people, I had to figure it out.

I discovered the four most important features of the people I was seeking were:

  • Organizer
  • Responsible
  • Independent
  • Learner

When I found people with those characteristics, I knew that they were going to be winners. I hope that you have seen the webinar. I’m unable to share the recording with you, but below is the slide deck I used. There’s a lot more behind what’s on these slides but they still might provide you with some insight.
